Sally Gunnell’s Staycation With Southampton Campers

Updated: Nov 12, 2020

2020 so far has been challenging and meant we have needed to approach things we usually take for granted, slightly differently.

Early this year I did manage to get away abroad with the family, but it wasn’t as enjoyable as usual, spending a lot of time monitoring websites for change in pandemic guidelines and filling in forms to declare where we were travelling from and too etc. In the back of our minds hoping and praying travel corridors wouldn’t be closed and leave us stranded.

Wanting to take some time out recently and not relishing the thought of getting on a plane, my husband and I opted for a staycation. We are both active individuals as you can imagine and so needed to factor in several different elements.

We were attracted to Southampton Campers because of their iconic VW California Ocean Campervans and the freedom this would give us. These vehicles were synonymous with exotic road trips down the Californian pacific coast highway but for us, we planned to use them to explore some of Britain’s awe-inspiring Jurassic coast!

My husband and I planned our four-day trip, taking our mountain bikes and a trusty travel book of the area. We booked our campervan hire using Southampton Campers online system. It was a very straight forward process, allowing us to submit all necessary paperwork and complete driver checks from the comfort of our sofa. Everything started well, and only got better from there on out!

We thoroughly enjoyed our choice of staycation experience. The vehicle provided by Southampton Campers was equipped with everything we could possibly need for our road trip. Fridge, cooking facilities, utensils, tableware, sink and running water. With their clever internal design, tables neatly folded out when needed. Even the front cab seats turned around so we could eat our meals across from each other. And when we were finished, easily and discreetly folded away.

At first, we didn’t know what to expect with sleeping arrangements, but we weren’t disappointed. With more clever design, things moved to provide a double bed size sleeping area with a comfortable mattress to go with it. Quilts and pillows were provided, and we were able to pull the smart blinds for total privacy. We didn’t use it, other than providing additional head space but there was a second sleeping area in the roof of the campervan. No detail had been overlooked.

Campervan Staycation Adventure

The freedom our campervan afforded us was brilliant. We were able to travel from site to site with ease. Arriving at a site was just a case of driving onto your pitch, plugging in and you were set. No putting up or packing away a tent or manoeuvring a tricky caravan. Those that know me, know I like things to be easy and straightforward. I couldn’t have asked for more.

In our four-day staycation, we visited 3 different locations. Having been able to pop our mountain bikes on the back of the campervan, we were able to go out and explore further. We loved visiting tucked-away locations and local gems. If you get a chance, go visit the Oyster Shack, in Bigbury!

This was a totally new experience for us but one we will look to do again. If you are considering a staycation and want the freedom to explore more of our great isles, give Southampton Campers ago. My husband and I would thoroughly recommend them.
