Affectionately nicknamed Pompey – a name shared with HMNB Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Football Club – this bustling hub is located just 25 miles from the home of our VW Campervan hire facility in Southampton.

Portsmouth is a famous site for some of the nation's most widely known ships and vessels. There is so much to see and do in a day! It is a perfect place to visit when hiring a VW campervan and with unlimited mileage, you are free to explore further afield should you wish to.

One of the best features about this city is the Park and Ride, which is located just outside the city centre at Tipner Interchange, M275 Junction 1, Portsmouth, PO2 8AN, where you can leave your campervan safely all day for just £4 and travel around the city using their comfortable busses. There are also toilet facilities within the onsite waiting room and vending machines for refreshments.

The Historic City

Portsmouth is one of the best known ports in the world and houses around two thirds of the Royal Navy's surface fleet, making the city a fantastic site for some of the nation's most famous ships and vessels.

The Historic Dockyard is one of the most exciting places to start your visit to Portsmouth and is the well known home of the remains of the Tudor era warship Mary Rose, which was King Henry VIII’s favourite ship and HMS Victory, Admiral Nelson’s flagship.

Built in 1510, the boat served the King for 34 years, before meeting its demise in the Solent in 1545 after defending England and Portsmouth from a French invasion fleet.

The Mary Rose museum has not long been refurbished and boasts views of the dramatically raised ship from 9 galleries and never before seen angles. It offers an immersive and hands on experience unlike any other, telling the story of what life was like on board. It is sure to leave you feeling breath taken.

The Emirates Spinnaker Tower

Located within the popular area of Gunwharf Quays, which is conveniently just a stone's throw from the Historic Dockyard, is the iconic and prominent Emirates Spinnaker Tower – visible from 23 miles away!

The tower offers amazing views across the city and over to the neighbouring towns and suburbs including Gosport, Appley Beach on the Isle of Wight and even on a clear day, the West Sussex seaside town of Worthing.

The scenery never stays the same with all the comings and goings of warships and cruise ships within this busy port.

For those thrill seekers amongst you, the Sky Walk offers a nerve defying 60mm glass platform allowing you to see down to the harbour 1,100m below you! Don’t worry though – the floor can withstand a weight of up to a massive 288 stone!

If this daredevil antic isn’t for you, there is still plenty of room to walk around the outside and enjoy the jaw dropping views from there.

This might be something incredible by itself, but nothing can beat unzipping the canvas on the pop up roof and enjoying the stunning scenery of the nearby Southsea beaches, or even the twinkling stars from the comfort of your very own campervan after an exciting day exploring!

Hire a campervan in Portsmouth and come see The Emirates Spinnaker Tower.
Hire one of our Portsmouth campervans and visit Fort Nelson.

Fort Nelson

If spectacular scenery and views are what you’re after, you won’t be disappointed by visiting the nearby Portsdown Hill.

This is a magical place to park up in your campervan and enjoy the view across Portsmouth, whilst brewing a cup of tea or rustling up a delicious meal in the adequately sized and fully equipped kitchen!

There are many sites around the city dedicated to everything from D-Day to the famous writer and critic Charles Dickens.

A favourite haunt has to be the free to visit Fort Nelson – one of 5 defensive forts built between 1860 and 1867 to protect the naval base. It was even designated as a world heritage site on 22 December 1971.

Explore some of the secret underground tunnels, hear stories about what life was like, see the biggest guns ever made, and discover outer ramparts and even ammunition bunkers across this 19-acre historical site.

They regularly hold special events too, which are suitable for all the family and there’s even ample and free parking just across the road too!

With its tidy dimensions which are actually similar to that of an MPV, you’ll have no trouble zipping along the beautiful nearby country roads in your campervan.

There is also the independent Albert Road shopping area in Southsea, known as the street of character and flavour, or just slightly further afield on the edge of the city is the little known gem of Port Solent.

This quirky harbourside area offers a truly unique shopping and dining experience with a range of branded and boutique stores and restaurants.

Why not use the fully equipped kitchen that your VW campervan has to offer? Buy some local produce and whip up a culinary delight! If you are looking for cooking inspiration, you’ll find the provided VW Campervan Cook Book in your vehicle, located in the door pocket. Just one of the little extra touches that you can expect when you use our campervan hire service.

If you don’t fancy trying to recreate a traditional Sunday dinner, then let Croxton’s Kitchen & Tap House do that for you. Accommodated in a former Post Office building, not only do they offer a superb roast, they can cater for both vegetarian and vegan diets along with gluten free, and are said to have some of the best burgers in town!

Southsea Farmers Market is a must! Any local will tell you that trying pork from the nearby New Forest is culinary delight. Pigs graze on acorns, beech mast and windfall apples from the orchards which gives the meat a superb taste unlike any other. It takes place from 10 am to 2 pm on the 3rd Sunday of every month. Find them at Palmerston Road, Southsea, PO5 3QE. You’ll be able to pack out the 42L campervan fridge with all your delicious produce!
